BIG READ HUMANITARIAN AWARD PRESENTED TO SANDERS, VAN DYKE, AND WOLFE
Tech Prep biotechnology teachers Rachel Sanders (Springfield), Mandy Van Dyke (Kettering Fairmont), and Bev Wolfe (Miami Valley CTC) were recognized for excellence in the classroom at the Big Read finale at the University of Dayton on April 12. The teachers were awarded the Big Read Humanitarian Award for their creative and dedicated teamwork.
The three teachers have collaborated on many projects. This year, their students read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The book touches on themes of bioethics, family, race, and progress. The teachers organized classroom discussions and projects, including a blog so that students from all three schools could discuss the book together.
Two of the classes had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion of the book with Sinclair professors, and Henrietta Lacks’ son, David, visited their classrooms to discuss the book with them while in the Dayton area for Big Read events.
