EFFECTIVE 2009-10 SCHOOL YEAR – MVTPC ADMISSION POLICIES NO LONGER EXIST

As a result of an announcement from the ODE regarding the guidelines set forth in the state’s Perkins IV plan, MVTPC’s admission criteria will be null and void from 2009-10 academic year forward. This announcement in no way affects an individual school’s or career center’s program(s) entrance requirements. Because of this change, MVTPC will be modifying the transmittal form accordingly. Certain data fields related to provisional/full admission will be eliminated. MVTPC will still need to collect names, addresses, SSNs, GPAs and other demographic information.
In addition, we will need the information on all students enrolled in Tech Prep approved programs in order to provide them Tech Prep services such as senior placement testing, proficiency and articulated Sinclair college credit, and Tech Prep scholarships, etc. Local data will need to be collected three times as before: 1. Start of the junior year. 2. Start of the senior year. 3. End of the 7th Semester of the senior year. In addition, ODE & OBR will need data on Tech Prep completers in accordance to Perkins IV requirements. How and who is to collect this data has yet to be determined by ODE/OBR.

MVTPC & SINCLAIR TO HOST FALL 2009 TECH PREP DIRECTOR’S CONFERENCE
The annual fall Tech Prep Director’s Conference will be held in Sinclair Community College’s Charity Auditorium starting with pre-conference activities beginning on September 8th and running through September 10th. Featured key-note speakers will be Dr. Barbara Danley, Vice Chancellor, Ohio Board of Regents on “Ohio’s Vision for Dual Enrollment” and Dr. Kathy Shibley, Director - Ohio Department of Education, Office of Career Technical on “Education Ohio’s Perkins Plan Update: Tech Prep For Any.” Since the MVTPC staff will be heavily engaged in host activities, there may be a slight delay in returning phone calls and responding to e-mails.

MVTPC GOVERNING BOARD MEETING SET FOR OCTOBER 5, 2009
The date for the fall meeting of the MVTPC Governing Board has been set for Monday, October 5, 2009 and will take place from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. The location will be in Building 12-131 on the campus of Sinclair Community College.

NEW LOOK FOR MVTPC WEBSITE - ADDS COLLEGE READINESS TOOL KIT
The MVTPC website has a new look for 2009-10 which includes easier navigation and better functionality. Also, there’s something brand new…
As part of an overall effort to assist recent high school graduates in being college-ready and to reduce remediation rates, the Miami Tech Prep Consortium (MVTPC) is launching a new initiative, the MVTPC College Readiness Tool Kit. The MVTPC College Readiness Tool Kit is designed to better inform our high school partners, parents and students what types of math, English and student success skills are necessary to met foundational “college-ready” guidelines after high school. The goal of the web-based MVTPC College Readiness Tool Kit is to help students develop learning activities and strategies which are proven to aid along the path to higher education or work. As the state implements the OHIO CORE academics and moves from the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) to the ACT as part of the high school exit assessment, the need to reduce remediation in mathematics and English Language Arts becomes even more critical and relevant. The state non-remediation standards have been embedded in our Programs of Study templates for two years, now we are beginning to create instructional components to help students reach those goals.
Also new this year for Tech Prep students is the American Education Corporation’s A+dvancer diagnostic test. This test is designed to help students, parents and teachers identify areas of strength and weakness in reading, writing and various levels of mathematics prior to taking a college placement test. The questions on the A+dvancer are normed to the ACT, SAT and Accuplacer and backed by solid empirical research. The MVTPC College Readiness Tool Kit will have resource links to Sinclair developmental coursework which have been aligned to the content areas covered in the A+dvancer topics which are:

  • Mathematics Skills Resource List
    • Basic Math
    • Introduction to Algebra
    • Instructional Videos
  • Writing Skills Resource List
  • College Transitions & Success Skills Resource List
    • Choosing a Career & Major
    • Finding Financial Aid
    • Study & Test-Taking Skills
    • College Transitions
    • ACT/SAT Preparation

CHANGES TO ON-LINE MAT 101 PROFICIENCY TEST
Breaking news… MAT 101 proficiency test takers will be able to use a calculator while taking the test this year. Plan to offer your students this free opportunity to enter college non-remedial in math and earn college credit at the same time!
