New and Converting Programs for 2010 - 2011

In anticipation of the 2010-2011 academic year, MVTPC has begun planning for program start ups or conversions to Tech Prep. We would like to receive preliminary plans by March 31, 2010. Here are some of the new pathways MVTPC is developing for 2010-2011:

  • Aviation
  • Emergency Medical Services & Fire Science
  • Government and Public Administration
  • Precision Machining, Electronics and Welding
As we did last year, we’ll post FY’11 POS resource materials on our website. These materials will have all the instructions on how to format and submit ODE’s POS template. The post-secondary section of the template will be completed for you.

GROWING THE ENGINEERING PATHWAY

The consortium is preparing to add electronics, robotics, and precision machining programs to its engineering pathway.

The timing of the addition of these programs coordinates well with changes at the college. As Sinclair plans to switch from quarters to semesters, the engineering department has identified core classes that all engineering students will take. These classes will be logical articulation targets for all existing and new Tech Prep engineering high school classes.

Supervisors who are interested in these new programs are invited to a working lunch on Wednesday, January 20, 11:30 – 1:00, Building 12, Room 164 to discuss goals for these program, the process we should follow to coordinate curricula, the new engineering core, and any other questions or ideas you have for this transition or Tech Prep in general. Please RSVP to Linda York by Tuesday, January 19.

Emerging Career Opportunities in the Miami Valley

Counselors are invited to attend a breakfast seminar, Emerging Career Opportunities in the Miami Valley on Thursday, February 4, 8:00 – 10:00. Keynote speaker will be Harry Moser, Chairman Emeritus of GF AgieCharmilles.

The seminar is sponsored by Dayton Regional STEM Center, the Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium, and the Dayton Tooling and Manufacturing Association. Join Mr. Moser to learn more about local career opportunities for people with training/education in advanced manufacturing, about entrepreneurial opportunities in advanced manufacturing, and about the very popular DTMA Bots program.

For more information or to make a reservation to this free event, please contact Maureen Carruthers at DTMA (937-512-3862).

MATH 101 PROFICIENCY TEST READINESS

Tech Prep students who utilize practice tests in preparation for the MATH 101 Proficiency Test fare much better on the final examination.
  • The practice tests can be taken multiple times to improve mathematical skills.
  • The practice tests should be taken in the sequence they are offered, and this year, for the first time, scientific calculators may be used during the test.
  • While practicing not only are the mathematical/algebra skills reviewed but the protocols and format of the questions also become commonplace so that on the final examination there are no surprises.
  • The building MATH 101 teachers/test coordinators, assuming they have provided their personal data to the Tech Prep MAT101 coordinator (David McDaniel), are able to access the course and see how many times their students have requested the practice tests and their individual test results.
  • Most schools that have requested to be a part of this four (4) credit hour proficiency foundational college math course have submitted their student names, but if this process is yet to be done, time is of the essence.
Communication regarding the MATH 101 course should be directed to David McDaniel (937-512-2407).

2010 SHOWCASE READINESS

This is the first call for the 2010 Tech Prep Show Case, which will be held on Thursday, April 29th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All 2009-2010 Tech Prep Pathway classes are invited and encouraged to take part in the 2010 MVTPC Showcase Extravaganza. Now is the time for Showcase Project Planning (Titles & Project procedures /format) which will make April 29th an exciting student day. The showcase activity is the largest activity of the consortium school year and the rewards and experiences gained by the students are monumental. All information regarding the Showcase may be accessed via the MVTPC Quick User Guide under the Activities Tab. Tech Prep Instructors having any questions regarding the showcase activity should contact Dave McDaniel (937-512-2407) for clarification or information.

We are IT event

Sinclair Community College, Dayton Campus hosted the 4th annual We are IT conference on Friday, November 20, 2009. This one-day conference was designed to help educate young women in 9th and 10th grade about the different types of IT careers. The conference is hosted, organized, and facilitated by women in IT. This year we had over 200 participants who attended sessions on many topics including Google Earth, Webpage Design, Photoshop, and many more. The event was a huge success, and the girls enjoyed the many door prizes that were available from our sponsors. For more information, please visit our website at www.weareitatscc.com. Two Times Community Involvement

Bev Smith, Engineering Pathway Coordinator, works part time for MVTPC and volunteers for the community too. January was a big month for her community work. She has been named Mentor of the Year for 2010 for her work as a youth mentor with Montgomery County Juvenile Drug Court. She also rejoined Clayton City Council for her third term as a council member. Congratulations!
