Considering a new Tech Prep program in FY’2010-2011?

All new CTE-26’s now require a Program of Study with each application. In order to make this process easier, the Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium is making available ODE’s FY’2010 POS templates, with the post-secondary portion already completed. Visit this link for step-by-step instructions for completing this form. When prompted, be sure to enable macros in Microsoft Word.

KETTERING FAIRMONT SENIORS WIN BIG

Three seniors from Kettering Fairmont High School won the Ohio Real World Design Challenge, a state contest sponsored by Governor Ted Strickland, the Ohio Department of Education, and Battelle Institute. As state champions, Team Fairmont will travel to Washington D.C. on March 26-29 to compete in the national Real World Design Competition.

The Real World Design Challenge requires students to solve an engineering problem; this year, the problem is how to make a business jet more fuel efficient.

Kettering Fairmont students Brian Catrine, William Timmer and Brandon Wehner chose this challenge as their Project Lead the Way senior capstone project. Their first step was to research the aerodynamics of flying and then consult with their teacher, David Lord, and with Jeff Donbar, a research engineer from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and former professor at Sinclair Community College, who was “very impressed with the students and their tenacity in solving the problem.”

Each team member plans to attend Sinclair Community College, earn his associate’s degree, and then transfer to a four year university to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

“The Real World Design Challenge enhances STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in Ohio,” said Governor Strickland of the competition. “It reflects Ohio’s commitment to giving students opportunities to creatively apply what they have learned.”

Criminal Science Students See the Real World of Their Profession

Fifty-seven Tech Prep junior Criminal Science students and their instructors toured the Ohio Police Officers Academy (OPOTA) in London, Ohio on March 2nd. The first stop was the Bureau of Criminal Investigation where senior examiners demonstrated the details of the Ohio finger print examination system. Last year the BCI center processed 1.9 million civilian cards and over 300,000 arrest cards. The next stop of the tour was the Tactical Training Center where the students witnessed demonstrations of firearms, driving simulators, crash investigation and shoot-don't-shoot scenarios. The fire arms session was a display of police tactical rifles, shotguns and pistols with a demonstration of the MP5 machine pistol. Students were transported to the main OPOTA building for lunch and then a tour of the law enforcement training center. OPOTA employees led the tour of the physical fitness center, classrooms, gymnasium and numerous offices. During the tour it was emphasized that foundations in mathematics, communication skills and physical fitness are absolutely necessary in order to be successful in today's law enforcement profession. The tour was set up and led by Criminal Science Department of Sinclair Community College who works in partnership with the Tech Prep program.
