2009 MVTPC SHOWCASE Showcase Spectacular!

Tuesday, April 28th brought 350 Tech Prep students to Sinclair Community College primed and ready to present their Capstone projects to 64 judges representing businesses and corporations from all over the Miami Valley. These experts in their field spent 15 minutes with each of the 91 teams listening to team members present their project problem, project hypothesis, and their implementation plan for their capstone project. After listening to the team presentation the professional judges had 5 minutes to ask the team and individual members clarifying questions regarding their specific project. Following the presentation each judge completed a structured rubric using a scale of 1-10 rating the categories of:
1) Research and Development
2) Authentic Work Based Learning & Problem Solving
3) Academic & Technical
4) Professional & Team Relationships and
5) Presentation Skills.
Each of the capstone teams presented a structured written template of their project prior to the competition which was scored by a Sinclair Community College English professor and the written point total was combined with the judging team rubrics to develop the total showcase points. The written rubric also allowed the judges to become familiar with the project before moving to the judging floor.
Scores of 65-56 earned a Superior Team rating (Blue Ribbon), 55-41 earned an Excellent Team rating (Red Ribbon) and 40 and below a Good Team Rating (White Ribbon). The highest team total of each pathway was declared the Pathway Champion and the next highest score the Runner-Up Champion. The Champions and Runner-Ups were invited to the Spring MVTPC Executive Luncheon on May 7th and awarded team trophies as well as members of the two award winning pathway teams received individual trophies for their outstanding accomplishments. Pictures of the Champions and Runner Ups may be found on the MVTPC's Flickr, www.flickr.com/photos/mvtechprep/.

Many positive comments were received from the pathway judges following the Showcase wanting the Consortium to know that they were impressed by the projects and the professional presentation of the Tech Prep students. Always a positive sign is when the judges say, "Call me next year"! The Sinclair Writing Template evaluator wanted the Pathway Teachers to know that she has seen a remarkable improvement in the writing presentations and many would be evaluated in a first year college class with excellent marks. Congratulations to all the students and teachers who participated in the 2009 Showcase and branded your class and school with the true essence of College Tech Prep.
