TECH PREP SENIORS LEARN BUSINESS FROM THE BEST

Five budding Tech Prep entrepreneurs from Kettering Fairmont recently jumped at a last-minute opportunity to attend a young professionals’ entrepreneurship conference sponsored by the Dayton Urban League. Featured speaker was Clay Mathile, former CEO of Iams and founder of Aileron, an entrepreneurs’ training and support center.

Mr. Mathile spoke about his journey as a business owner and offered this advice to students: begin by getting all the education you can; seek a mentor at your early jobs; be honest; do your best every day. And remember that success in business and life is all about people. Treat others with dignity and respect.

Students also enjoyed presentations by Sean and Shawntay Fields, two energetic young entrepreneurs who own Comtactics, and the dynamic owner of McAfee Heating and Air Conditioning, Greg McAfee.

CT2 SECONDARY ADVISORY COUNCIL

On November 5th, the new formed CT2 Secondary Advisory Council will meet for the first time in Columbus at the offices of the Ohio Board of Regents. Nick Wilson, Interim Director – MVTPC, has been asked to serve on this council as a representative. Any questions which you would wish to communicate to the OBR or ODE regarding CT2 implementation or the C-TAGs, forward those to nick.wilson@sinclair.edu.

ANOTHER MVTPC PROGRAM GETS KUDOS

MVTPC & Sinclair Community College are featured in the publication Thriving in Challenging Times: Connecting Education to Economic Development Through Career Pathways by the National Career Pathway Network and the Institute for a Competitive Workforce, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The article “Logistic and Supply Chain Technology Education” by Bob Sheehan, Program Manager for MVTPC is located on pages 32-33 and is available free online at www.cord.org/thriving-in-challenging-times.

The publication’s intent is to highlight successful education-business partnerships that challenge learning environments. The publication profiles 17 programs from across the U.S. by documenting the challenges, strategies, results, and business engagement each partnership has experienced.

BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS BUILD STRENGTH AND QUALITY IN MVTPC PATHWAYS

On November 10th the Biotechnology Pathway held an event at Sinclair for the new junior class secondary students. The orientation was a chance for students, secondary instructors and business partners to interact on a personal basis. Alkermes Inc., a pharmaceutical company based in Wilmington, Ohio, is very interested in supporting programs that will produce skilled applicants for their human resources needs. Secondary Tech Prep instructors are interested in providing real-world learning opportunities for their pathway students who need to understand what it will take on their part to be a strong candidate for employability in their chosen field.

Alkermes provided a team of employees who not only taught the importance of a sterile workplace environment, but also demonstrated on an interactive basis the “Gowning Process” common to their everyday protocols. The enjoyable presentation really hit home with the students due to the H1N1 procedures taking place in their schools and the personal responsibility to remain free from contamination. Learning outcomes involving problem solving, self discipline and following specific protocols were reinforced by the Alkermes business partner team who related these practices from their workplace to the classroom laboratory and to the personal responsibility of each worker/student.

This special learning experience is just one of many examples of the teamwork expected and carried out on an annual basis in the Tech Prep learning environments of the MVTPC. Tech Prep students are so fortunate to experience these powerful synergistic partnerships of business partners-college-secondary instructors and secondary pathway students teaming together with common goals and standards.
