MEtaMorph Effectiveness

Research Summary:

The MEtaMorph curriculum was successful at increasing career awareness among all participating groups and more successful than past practice. MEtaMorph participants also demonstrated more career awareness than their tenth grade counterparts.

MEtaMorph was significantly effective across student achievement levels (i.e. low, medium, and high achievement). The English teachers reported that they found the material valuable, not only in developing career awareness but also in developing students' language arts skills. In addition, they reported that students enjoyed working with the materials.

All nine teachers delivered the curriculum in the designated sequence. They did use some latitude in the delivery process, and as with all tests, some teachers were unable to or chose not to use all the lessons. The analysis revealed, however, that classes that completed the curriculum as designed (omitting only activities labeled as optional) showed greater improvement than those that skipped parts of lessons.

Other variances had no measurable effect on outcomes. MEtaMorph was effective even in classes that experienced problems gaining access to computers on a continuing basis. About half the schools used the online Ohio Career Information System (OCIS) and half used the Kuder Career Planning System, but this difference had no apparent impact on the posttest scores.

These findings reinforce the fact that while the existing MEtaMorph curriculum is most effective when used in its entirety, it's sufficiently resilient to succeed in widely varied environments and delivery conditions. It also demonstrates that well designed integrated learning experiences can achieve the central goal while simultaneously improving corollary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
