Lesson 4: High School Options
Mapping Your Trip

Optional Activity 1 – High School Environment

Now that you have chosen career areas that interest you, it's time to look at what is available to help you prepare. First, let's take a closer look at your high school. You'll need your career journal.

  1. Study the range of courses offered at your high school by looking on your school's Web site or in a course selection booklet from your guidance office. Choose three courses you have not taken and complete the assignment sheet .

  2. Choose two people on your high school's staff (teacher, administrator, coach, custodian, etc.) and ask them to fill out a career profile sheet. You must sign up with your teacher before you contact the staff members of your choice. Record in your career journal what their career path teaches you about career choices and how that information influences your own choices.

  3. Visit your school's library/media center and find two non-Internet sources that could help you find out more about your specific career interests. You could use books about careers, biographies of someone in the field, magazines related to specific careers, etc. Complete the assignment sheet.

  4. Visit your high school guidance office/media center and locate the following to complete the assignment sheet:

    • A college majors guide.

    • Information about a technical program or career center program.

    • Information about the ACT/SAT.

    • Information about military service opportunities.

    • A college view book.
