Title: 100 Years of Flight

Teachers: Eldridge, Schmidt

Business: Newspapers in Education

Description: In 1901, after a day of unsuccessful testing, Wilbur Wright said, "Not within a thousand years will man ever fly." December 17, 1903, however, is the day when Wilbur and his brother Orville finally proved that statement wrong by demonstrating that man could indeed fly. The world will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brother's success in 2003. It will be a celebration of inspiration, innovation, and progress and will provide the perfect opportunity to encourage students to learn the science behind flight, investigate the application of math and science to the field of aeronautics, uncover the impact of flight on society, explore aeronautical careers and discover history. This unit is designed to give students the opportunity to do these things and to take advantage of the significant number of relevant resources in the Dayton, Ohio area. This unit is intended for use at the 4th - 6th grade levels but is easily adaptable to other grades. Many aviation educational ideas already exist. The goal of this project was to select and coordinate a manageable number of activities to be used across a variety of disciplines.
