TIES Curriculum Module

Title: Bridging Cultures Within Communities

Teachers: Reeves, Waller

Business: Family Service Association

Description: Through language study, students develop sensitivity to the cultural and linguistic heritage of other groups and their influences on our own so that they are prepared to participate in culturally diverse communities. In this multidisciplinary unit created for high school grade levels in Spanish, Social Studies/Government, English/Language Arts and Mathematics, students will become familiar with immigration laws and processes; as well as gain a better understanding of why people choose to come to the United States from Mexico. In addition, it allows students to gain appreciation for their own family histories as well as an understanding of the hopes and challenges faced by immigrants. For today's students, who will become tomorrow's workforce, it is increasingly more vital to develop an awareness and understanding of other cultures. This unit will take approximately nine weeks.
